Zero Waste Wards

This project aims to capacitate ward committees with technical knowledge and expertise in Solid Waste Management, in order to support and aid local area planning, budgeting and implementation of solutions.

Location: Bengaluru

Grant Funder: Wipro Foundation, Urban Ecology Small Grant Programme

Duration: April 2020 - February 2021

Status: On-going

As stated in the SWM Manual released in Nov 2017 - "It is the responsibility of the WARD COMMITTEES to draft the Ward Action Plan taking into consideration the ward requirement, budgetary allocations, infrastructure requirement while aligning it with the SWM policy of ULB." More than 2 years down, ward committees have been unable to create their ward action plans due to various issues ranging from data to technical knowledge/guidance.

The two main components of the project will include the development of the following:

  1. Planning toolkit - Development of a Planning Framework for Zero Waste Wards, that is scalable and replicable across all 198 wards. (Will be piloted in 2 wards)

  2. Technology selection tool - Development of a decision-making tool for the selection of technologies or a combination of them, in order to achieve maximum processing at the scale of a ward. (Will be piloted in 15 wards).
